Austria's Research Legacy

Austria's scientific heritage includes Erwin Schrödinger (Nobel Physics 1933, quantum mechanics), Anton Zeilinger (Nobel Physics 2022, quantum entanglement), and Ferenc Krausz (Nobel Physics 2023, attosecond physics — foundational work partly at TU Wien). Lise Meitner's Vienna research contributed to the discovery of nuclear fission. Five Nobel Prize winners of Austrian origin are attributable to the quantum sciences — an extraordinary legacy for a nation of 9.2 million.

A Global Leader in Quantum Research

Innsbruck is one of the world's foremost centres for quantum computing research. The University of Innsbruck (Rainer Blatt group) achieved one of the first experimental realizations of a quantum computer using ion traps. In 2004, the team achieved controlled quantum teleportation between atoms — a global first. ISTA (Institute of Science and Technology Austria), founded with Anton Zeilinger's involvement, is among Europe's fastest-growing research institutes. Austria is a founding partner of the €1 billion European Quantum Flagship initiative.

High-Quality Research Output

In 2025, five Austrian universities feature in the top 100 of the Shanghai ARWU. Austria ranks in the world's top 1% in life sciences, physics, computer science and environmental science. R&D expenditure is ~3.2% of GDP — above the EU average. The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and Research Promotion Agency (FFG) together distribute over €1 billion annually in competitive research grants.

ISTA: The Future of Science in Austria

ISTA (Institute of Science and Technology Austria) in Maria Gugging near Vienna is a postgraduate research university (est. 2006) operating exclusively at the cutting edge of basic science. All ISTA PhD students receive full scholarships, a competitive salary (gross ~€2,200+/month), health insurance and housing support. Faculty and PhD students come from over 70 countries. ISTA's research output per faculty member consistently outperforms many larger institutions.

Research Opportunities for International Students

OeAD administers government scholarships for international researchers including the Ernst Mach Grant (short research stays), Franz Werfel Scholarship and joint awards with 40+ countries. The University of Vienna, TU Wien, Medical Universities in Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck, and ISTA all accept international doctoral applications year-round.
