Eight Austrian universities appear in the QS World University Rankings 2026, with five placed in the world's top 500. The Medical University of Vienna ranks #60 globally in QS 2025. The University of Vienna (founded 1365, ranked #152 QS 2025) leads the country across 28 ranking systems. Vienna is home to eight QS top-500 universities in a single city. In specialist subjects: the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna ranked 4th worldwide in Performing Arts (QS 2025); the University of Vienna achieved top-50 rankings in seven subjects including Media & Communication (15th) and History (44th). BOKU University ranked 28th globally in Agriculture & Forestry.

Austrian degrees are awarded under the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) and recognised across all 27 EU member states and 50+ countries. All programmes use the Bologna Process structure (Bachelor / Master / PhD) and ECTS credits, making qualifications fully transferable internationally. Employers worldwide specifically recognise degrees from TU Wien, University of Vienna, WU Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna.

Every institution must be accredited by AQ Austria. Public universities operate under the Universities Act (Universitätsgesetz 2002) and are supervised by the Federal Ministry (BMBWF). The Austrian Quality Assurance Framework aligns with European Standards and Guidelines (ESG). International students benefit from the Recognition Act, fair examination rights, appeal mechanisms and access to the independent Austrian Students' Union (ÖH).

Austria's 73 higher education institutions include: 22 public universities (research-intensive, tuition-free for EU/EEA during standard duration); 21 Universities of Applied Sciences / Fachhochschulen (practice-oriented, strong industry links); 13 private universities (specialised, own fees); 17 teacher education colleges. Major cities including Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Linz run international student centres with language and cultural integration programmes.
