The next stage is applying for your Austrian Residence Permit.

Pakistani students apply for their Residence Permit through the Austrian Embassy in Islamabad. The Embassy opens Residence Permit submission windows during specific periods each year. These windows are officially announced by the Embassy.

Appointment Invitation

Once your appointment is confirmed, the Embassy will send you an email containing:

• Appointment date
• Required documents
• Application forms
• Submission instructions

You must appear in person at the Austrian Embassy in Islamabad on the scheduled date.

After submitting your application, your documents are forwarded to the competent Austrian authorities.

Processing Time

The official processing time is approximately 3 months. However, actual processing may vary depending on:

• Application volume
• University
• Province in Austria
• Individual case complexity

Some applications may take longer.

Applicants must prove sufficient financial means for 12 months in advance.

Where Can the Money Be Held?

The funds must be:

• In your own bank account or savings account.
• Accessible from Austria.

Alternative Proof of Funds

Instead of personal savings, applicants may also use:

• Declaration of guarantee (Haftungserklärung) from an eligible sponsor residing in the EU

Accommodation Costs

If your monthly accommodation costs exceed €386.43, you must demonstrate additional financial resources. You must also show proof of adequate health insurance.

The residence authority may ask you to explain where your money comes from. You should be prepared to provide supporting evidence.

Once your Residence Permit is approved, you will receive an approval notification from the relevant Austrian authority.

Shortly afterwards—usually within a week—the Austrian Embassy in Islamabad will also contact you by email. The Embassy will instruct you to submit your passport for the Visa D sticker.

Your passport is submitted through VFS Global. Depending on the Embassy's instructions, you may either:

• Walk into the VFS office, or
• Book a passport submission appointment.

Processing Time

Visa D stamping usually takes around 1–2 weeks. However, processing times may be longer depending on workload.

Once your passport is returned with the Visa D sticker, you are ready to travel. The Visa D allows you to enter Austria and collect your Residence Permit card after arrival.

After entering Austria, you should:

• Register your residence (Meldezettel), if required.
• Collect your Residence Permit card from the competent authority.
• Complete your university enrollment.
• Open a local bank account (if needed).
• Arrange health insurance if not already finalized.
• Begin your studies.

• Start the process 6–12 months before your intended semester.
• Apply for HEC, MOFA, and legalization as early as possible, as these stages often take the longest.
